(#2004-103)

Jerry,

The merry month of May that I was to turn 50, my son, Thiel was to turn =
21.
I was in Atlanta and he was in Denver. On the phone, I told him that =
many
people would consider this month a significant milestone for both of us.
Without missing a beat he replied, "Yah, Mom, I'm becoming an adult and
you're becoming a kid again." You know it's very true. I love my =
"rekindled"
child and now especially being a grandmother.=20

Some folks tell me I look young for 57. I'm proud to say, "This is what =
57
looks like."=20

Dear Jerry,

I think I know a story which might suit your needs. For me it is a =
coming of
age story, finding out what is important in life. The title is _Granny
Gifts_
by Andrenna Belcher. It is found in _Best Loved Stories from the =
National
Storytelling Festival - Twentieth Anniversary_ I believe. I can double =
check
the
source tomorrow for you but right now I am heading for some much needed
sleep.

warm wishes,

Jerry, and all,

One of the most moving story snippets I've heard is a personal one I =
heard
at a dinner party just this past week: One of my neighbors, a student in =
law
school, is a single parent of twin 11-year-olds, plus an older boy with
behavioral problems severe enough to require him being in a kind of =
boarding
school.

At that dinner, she asked the group of those women present to celebrate =
a
milestone birthday with her this coming November.

It never occured to me that her big event would be her big 5-0. So, tell =
her
about Debra Brown, and all those other women who believe 50 may be a
milestone, but not a stumbling block.

Best Wishes,

Audrey Galex

Dear Friends,

I have a close friend, female, who's turning 50 next week. She's looking
back
and looking forward. She asked me for a story for her birthday.

Well...?

Jerry

50 is not old. It is young!

I like a story called The Old Jar which can be found in The Rainbow =
People
by Lawrence Yep. An old woman goes to market to buy a new jar to keep =
her
rice in. She manages to acquire an old cracked jar for nothing. It is =
old
and cracked but it still has value. As she rolls it home, she chants,
"Keep the mice from my rice, mice from my rice." Various people want to
aquire the jar to break and make stepping stones, to use as a stool in =
the
garden, etc. but the old woman feels the jar is like her--old but still
with value and refuses. The people in her village laugh at her cracked
jar. She puts her rice in the jar and it is only a little on the bottom
but then she discovers that no matter how much rice she eats, the same
amount is there in the morning. The villagers want to buy her jar or go
into partnership with her to double the gold coins, etc. She shuts the
door in their faces and says that magic is not to be laughed at.

Age is also not to be laughed at. There is value left in us yet.
